Open C Tuning (CGCGCE) is one of the most frequently used alternate guitar tunings. It is used by many great bands, like Led Zeppelin and Soundgarden. The C-major chord sounds very rich and powerful in this tuning (try it: strike all the strings without any fretting). Here is an example, played with a guitar slide:
