How to create MIDI Drum Patterns for your Riff

If you want to make MIDI drum pattern for your riff in Cubase (or in some similar digital audio software) and to hear how it sounds together (riff + drum pattern), then you should read the this quick guide.

The basic drum pattern is:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

So, in the audio file above there are four bars. The first and the third beat in a bar is kick drum, the second and the fourth beat in a bar is snare drum and hi-hat is on all four beats in a bar. Corresponding MIDI bar should look like this:

You can customize this basic drum pattern according to your needs. For example, if the riff is:

then, if you play this riff together with the basic drum pattern it should sound like this:

Now, if you move the second kick drum in a bar for 2/16 to left:

Red kick drum moved

then you will get the following:

Further, if you add two more kick drums just as it is show on the following image:

2 more kicks added

then the result is:

Finally, if you add open hi-hats as it is shown on the following picture:

then you will get the following:
